Groundwater Assessment of Service Station

Overview

ARC was engaged to conduct an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) for a privately owned Ampol petrol station in WA, to assist with the sale of the property. It was reported that there was free-phase petroleum product (light non-aqueous phase liquid [LNAPL]) once present within groundwater close to the fill lines (southern boundary of site) that was discovered during excavations along the fill lines.

Scope

This ESA was conducted in two separate stages of work:

  • Stage 1 focused on soil and groundwater investigations within the Site boundary, which identified localised petroleum hydrocarbon impacts within the groundwater at the southern corner of Site.
  • Stage 2 expanded the investigation area to include off-Site groundwater wells, to reassess the contamination status within the Site boundary and to determine if there were

Challenge

To determine the liabilities associated with contamination to allow for the sale of the site.

Outcome

Based on the results of this ESA, the petroleum hydrocarbon impacts were delineated within the investigation area, and the ongoing monitoring and management was defined. This allowed for the estimation of liabilities associated with contamination and the site sale proceeded.
