Landfill Gas Risk Assessment, Audit and Mitigation at Sydney Olympic Park
Overview
Since 2019, ARC have been providing consulting services for the assessment and management of environmental risks posed by legacy landfills to the GWS Giants AFL Training Facility in the Sydney Olympic Park Precinct, designated by NSW state government as a State Significant Development (SSD).

Scope
Challenge
To enable extension of the AFL training facility, which has included two building extensions to the existing clubrooms, a new aquatic facility and the installation of oval light towers in the past 5 years, ARC have undertaken various landfill gas and soil risk assessments to inform landfill gas mitigation requirements, management of surplus soils during construction and ultimately the Site Audit Statement, required prior to occupation.

The outcome of the risk assessment was the requirement, design and installation of a ground gas management system. ARC developed the Long-Term Environmental Management Plan (LTEMP) for ongoing management of the system. At the completion of our works, the NSW EPA Site Auditor confirmed that the installed ground gas management system provided an acceptable level of protection from the intrusion of landfill gas, and the Site Audit Statement was successfully issued.
ARC supported in identifying soils suitable for reuse at the facility to reduce the costs associated with removing and disposing of contaminated soils.
